Preliminary Evaluation: Filming

What was successful in your filming?
I think that overall the whole film was successful, however in particular I think that there were a few shots that we did very well, such as the first shot and the match-on-action shots throughout the film. Some of these shots were quite hard to get right and ensure that the continuity wasn’t affected.
Did you use a variety of shots? What were you trying to achieve with certain shots and why do you think your choice of shot mattered?
We tried to use a good variety of shots to test the abilities of the camera. We made use of a lot of over the shoulder shots after our initial establishing shot to keep the 180 degree rule. I think that what we were trying to achieve with our shots was to emulate the constant back and forward of ideas being flung about. We used our long opening shot that followed because it led well into the wide shot to establish the 180 degree rule. I think our choice of shot mattered because it allowed us to capture the essence of the film well.
How well do you feel you are framing shots, positioning subjects, using camera techniques?
I think that I am framing shots well, though looking back at the film I can see that there is definitely room for improvement to get everything necessary into the frame with a sense of evenness and symmetry to ensure that the film looks well filmed. Positioning subjects is a hard thing to get perfectly right but I think that I made a fairly good attempt. It was hard to get the subject directly in the middle of the frame and that is something that I can definitely work on. For camera techniques, the mount for the camera made it much easier to keep the shots stable and make smooth transitions between angles, as well as it keeping it steady for some of the wide shots. It was hard sometimes to get the camera to focus properly as we were using a phone camera but it was something that we were able to work around and get a good finished product out of.
Continuity successes and difficulties?
There was a lot of trouble with keeping the continuity flowing in the film. Considering we had a good few props in the one location that we had to track added to the fact that we had to film over several different days, it was hard to keep the props in position, keep them on the correct side of the actor and ensure that the actor was interacting with the props in the same way. However, I think that overall we managed to maintain the continuity very well throughout the film with only minor errors.
Did you observe the 180 degree rule?
Yes we did. We used the opening shot as the establishing shot and from then on we made sure that our over the shoulder shots were on the correct side of the actor and made sure that the other wider angles were on the correct side of the 180 degree rule.
How did you manage lighting, sound, mise en scene?
Lighting was easy enough to manage as the film was supposed to look like a lot of time had passed in between scenes. Sound was fairly easy to manage, as we used the mic on a pair of earphones as it was better than the built in mic. We added some music in the editing stage however there wasn’t much use for sound effects in the film. Mise en scene was easy enough to manage as well as we filmed in an art room and the set around us didn’t change during filming. The only real thing that we had to watch was having the blinds in the room open to allow the light in.
